ITAP Athlete flies high

The Iona Talented Athlete Program is a multi-faceted sporting program available to students in Years 7 to 12, with the overall goal of inspiring young athletes to pursue excellence in their sport, while maintaining their academic pursuits.

The program aims to provide extra support for our aspiring and elite athletes, as well as providing a platform for all students, helping them improve and pursue excellence in their sport, no matter their ability or representative level. ITAP also promotes an holistic approach to sport, fitness, exercise, health and wellbeing throughout the school community.

One of the first students to sign up for the ITAP program was Year 10 student, Matthew Catania. Matthew has just returned from the Australian Athletics Championships where he made it into the final, his first National level final, finishing 8th in the Under 17s 5kg Hammer Throw out of a competitive field of 15 very experienced throwers. All three NSW competitors (pictured above – Matthew on left), who are also firm friends, made it through to the final. This throw has qualified Matthew for the Under 18s 5kg Hammer Throw at the 2018 National Athletics Championships as he threw 42.70 metres, the qualifier being a 40 metre throw. Matthew will be attempting to qualify in the 6kg Hammer Throw over the next year in order to compete in the Under 20 event at next year’s Nationals as well.
