As we approach the end of another vibrant term, I find myself reflecting on the journey of our graduating Year 12 students. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch them grow and thrive throughout their time at St Columba. This cohort has contributed extensively to the life of our school, leaving an indelible mark on our community. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and spirit have set a wonderful example for our younger students. As they prepare for their upcoming examinations, we wish them every success and look forward to hearing about their future endeavours.
The journey of our Year 12s exemplifies a crucial aspect of education that I’d like to discuss today: the importance of consistent engagement and attendance in school life.
At St Columba, we believe that every day of learning is an opportunity for growth, discovery, and progress. Our dedicated teachers work tirelessly to create engaging lessons and meaningful experiences for our students. However, these efforts can only bear fruit when students are present and actively participating in their education.
Research consistently shows a strong correlation between regular attendance and academic achievement. Every day at school counts towards building a solid foundation for future success. Consider this striking statistic:
80% attendance might sound acceptable, but it actually equates to missing one full day of school each week.
To put this into perspective, over the course of a student’s secondary school journey, this level of absence amounts to more than an entire year of missed learning opportunities. That’s an entire year of crucial concepts not fully grasped, engaging discussions missed, and valuable teacher guidance not received.
While academic attendance is crucial, we also recognise the immense value of our strong co-curricular program. These activities provide opportunities for students to gather with like-minded peers, build positive connections, and develop a deep sense of belonging within our school community. Our senior students play a vital role as mentors for younger students, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. This term, we’ve seen the fruits of these programs in numerous successes including:
- Our secondary touring dance group claimed first place at the Port Macquarie Dance Eisteddfod
- The entertaining circus troupe continues to delight audiences
- Our chess team advanced to the state finals
- Several students have excelled in public speaking competitions
- The outdoor education program has conducted successful expeditions
- Our partnership with Go IT continues to flourish
- We celebrated a triumph at the HRIS Athletics competition
And we are eagerly looking forward to the Musical next term, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
These achievements demonstrate the power of consistent engagement and the strong sense of community we have built together.
As we look ahead to the next term, let’s work together to ensure that every student can benefit fully from both the academic and co-curricular experiences we offer. Here are a few suggestions:
- Encourage regular attendance and active participation in class
- Support your child’s involvement in co-curricular activities that interest them
- Communicate with us if your child is struggling with attendance for any reason – we’re here to support you
- Celebrate good attendance and help your chld understand its importance in their overall development
Remember, every school day is an investment in your child’s future. Whether in the classroom or on the sports field, in a debate or a dance performance, each experience contributes to their growth and success.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in education. Together, we can ensure that every student at St Columba has the best possible chance to learn, grow, and succeed.
Wishing you a restful and enjoyable break,
Paul Rikmanis
