Alex’s Musical Journey

Since graduating from SCAS in 2010, Alex Siegers has been busy trying lots of different things and travelling lots of different places.

In 2011, Alex spent her gap year working as a Music Assistant at South Hampstead High School in London. She used her holidays to explore much of Europe – travelling to France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy, Malta, Hungary, Poland, Scotland and Wales. While in London she sang Soprano II with the Merbecke, the Choir of Southwark Cathedral. She also studied jazz under Brigitte Beraha and Barry Green. The musical highlight was participating in week 2 of the Darlington Festival in Devon where Alex studied early music and jazz.

In 2012 Alex commenced a Bachelor of Music Studies/Bachelor of Arts at The University of Sydney majoring in Jazz Performance, Linguistics and Asian Studies. Over the next five years while completing her studies, Alex found herself employed in a number of different areas. Her main engagement was as a full time member as Alto 1 of The Choir of St James, King St, with whom she has toured to South-East Asia and Turkey, and recorded multiple CDs. She has also performed with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Sydney Chamber Choir, the Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral and in a freelance capacity.

From 2012 to the end of 2014 Alex lived on campus at Sancta Sophia, a residential college within The University of Sydney. While there, she involved herself in college life, joining the netball, basketball, soccer, and athletics teams; performing in the instrumental and vocal ensembles; and organising a number of inter college events and fundraisers. She was elected Fresher Representative in her first year, and Music Secretary in her second year.

Alex has also has worked as choral director at Monte Sant Angelo, North Sydney; Marist Sisters College, Woolwich; SCEGGS, Darlinghurst; run workshops for a number of community choirs; and volunteered as National Coordinator for Vocal Australia. In 2015 she went on exchange to The University of California, Santa Barbara, for six months. While in California, between studying, she travelled around the state and nation, seeing Big Sur, San Fransisco, Joshua Tree National Park, Death Valley National Park, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Chicago, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Alex graduated from The University of Sydney at the end of 2016. After working temporarily at Gondwana Voices as Artistic Operations Assistant, she commenced a full time role at Sydney Youth Orchestras as Marketing and Digital Coordinator. She is still a full-time member of The Choir of St James, King St and continues to sing the occasional freelance gig.

Recently Alex had the honour of singing at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Gallipolli, simulcast on ABC Television from ANZAC Cove.
