It’s hard to believe that what was started over thirty years ago by Ian Kiernan, AO, an “average Australian bloke” who had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard, has now become the nation’s largest community-based environmental event. Over a million Aussies step up to clean up every year, donating their time to improve the environment. Today, the focus is as much on preventing rubbish from entering our environment as it is on removing what has already accumulated.
Once again, our school will be joining in and cleaning up our school environment on Friday, 28 February. During Science and Technology lessons next week, children will be engaged in a range of learning activities that focus on the important themes of sustainability, caring for, and taking responsibility for our environment.
To participate in the activities on the day, it is necessary for the children to have with them a pair of snug-fitting gloves. Gardening gloves are perfect. Please do not equip them with disposable, dishwashing or stiff leather gloves as these would be unsuitable for the planned clean up activities.
Schools Clean Up Day is always a great opportunity to reflect on how well we are managing our rubbish in our own environment, and the children always make insightful discoveries and suggestions for improvement.
