On the 10th November, all of Year 4 set off for the Great Aussie Bush Camp, located in Tea Gardens. The two buses were filled with excitement and anticipation for the two days ahead. When we arrived, we were greeted by our fearless leaders – Ray, Mason and Georgia – who lead the three groups through the experiences of camp.

The rest of the time at camp involved snow cones, Pioneering, the Giant Swing, Archery, Fencing, the Dual Flying Fox and a night time Disco. These activities involved teamwork, stepping outside of our comfort zones, focus and concentration. Throughout camp, we witnessed many children facing their fear of heights by conquering the thirteen metre high Giant Swing.

Children were taught life skills such as how to tie the perfect knot, how to cooperate in groups, and how to fix a blue waist harness. By the time the disco came around at night, many of the children were tired out but still enjoyed the games, dancing, music, light show and finally the rain. Even some of the teachers couldn’t resist getting in on the fun and showing the students their dance moves.

We are extremely proud of all the Year 4 students, especially when for some it was their first time they had stayed away from home overnight. The children were treated with milk, cookies and a story before bed. This seemed to give them a good night’s rest as they were full of energy early the next morning – at 6am!

The most popular activity seemed to be the Giant Swing, followed closely by the Dual Flying Fox. This seems to indicate that the children like the thrill of heights, unlike some the teachers. We were even treated to the sight of some of the campground’s wildlife- kangaroos, lace monitors (goannas) and some native Australian birds.

Due to the success of this year’s Great Aussie Bush Camp, these students will be going again next year
for even longer. Well done to all students for their cooperation, participation, good behaviour and enthusiasm at camp.
