On the 25th of June one of our Year 8 students, Maggie Newton, will be cutting and donating her hair to the charity Hair for Heart to be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a medical condition.
To be able to achieve the required length of 45 centimetres to make a wig, she will be shaving her head to a number 4 leaving behind just 12mm of hair.
Wigs can cost families up to $6,000, and generally only last around one to two years, meaning families can spend tens of thousands of dollars on the purchase of wigs throughout a child’s growing years. Maggie was inspired to sign up for the cause after seeing the results when a friend of hers recently took part.
“My family has been really lucky and hasn’t experienced cancer so I wanted to do what I can to help people and families who are going through something,” says Maggie.
In addition to donating her hair, Maggie is fundraising for Variety the Children’s Charity to provide vital medical equipment to children in need. Her initial fundraising goal was $2000, which she has reached. Now, her new goal is $3000.
To help Maggie reach her goal of $3000 you can donate via her online fundraising profile.
