Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) Finals

Over the weekend, Ivy Moore, Olivia Stanley and I travelled to Canberra with Mr O’Mullane to participate in the National Finals of Model United Nations Assembly, or MUNA.

MUNA is based on a continuing successful project, originally organised by the Rotary Club of Forbes, NSW, which has now been adopted by Rotary Districts and is enthusiastically supported by the United Nations. Many Rotary Districts run their own MUNA event each year. The National MUNA that we attended in Canberra brings together winners of District MUNA events to debate United Nations related issues in our nation’s capital. Teams debate topics of international concern such as world peace, environmental issues and human rights over two days at the Old Parliament House.

Each team of three represented a nation from the UN and we chose to represent the country of Canada. Sitting in the House of Representatives in Old Parliament House, we debated six contentious issues, with every country speaking on at least one, before a final vote to pass or defeat the resolution. The weekend gave us an opportunity to meet students from all over the country, and we developed our understanding of current issues on the international stage. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and highly recommend SCAS students join the Interact Club and put their hands up for it in the future. A big thank you to Mr O’Mullane for travelling with us and the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise for their support.
