In an age-old German tradition, the Nikolaus visits children in Germany and secretly delivers goodies into polished shoes that they have left by the door on the night of the 6th of December.
The story of St Nick goes back thousands of years – he was a kind and generous man and loved to secretly hand out gifts to needy children. Nowadays the tradition lives on and children reflect on the year gone by. You certainly want your boot full of treats rather than sticks, coals or potatoes!
Our German learners have enjoyed discussing and comparing German traditions with the Australian ones. They certainly would approve of celebrating Christmas like the Germans on Christmas Eve.
