Year 11 and 12 Dance, Drama and Entertainment Industry students recently experienced a packed excursion to Sydney. Some of the most memorable moments of the Drama trip were attending OnStage and feeling the buzz of the crowd in an awesome celebration of the diversity in skills of outstanding Higher School Certificate work. The students also attended Belvoir Theatre for a great workshop in performing monologue culminating in a memorable performance by Year 11 student Sai Dogra. We were even fortunate enough to watch the filming of upcoming Sci-Fi blockbuster Pacific Rim 2 at Tumbling Park. We capped off our Sydney trip with a visit to the Australian Theatre for Young People to watch a selection of very contemporary performances by a young and brave cast.
Dance students enjoyed a contemporary technique class with Mira Mansell. Mira has many years of experience based in Martha Graham technique. The students learnt a lot about their bodies and the history of the style. Dance and Entertainment Industry students had the privilege of seeing Aladdin The Musical at the Capitol Theatre. It was a spectacular show that inspired all students in dance, lighting, staging and production. Our distance education dancers from St Philip’s Christian College joined us for these opportunities. Dancers were also treated to a four hour choreographic workshop on improvisation and composition techniques with choreographers Miranda Wheen and Marnie Palomares from Dance Makers Collective.
They finished the trip with HSC showcase Callback at the Seymour Centre, gaining insight into standards of performance and composition from outstanding work in 2016 practical examinations. Students also supported SCAS Alumni Inez Jacobs who was chosen to perform her exemplary Core Performance from 2016 and then wished fellow Alumni Erin Duly luck for her film screening in the Friday showcase.
