Year 9 students studying Marine and Aquaculture Technology recently attended an excursion to Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters Centre, and the Cookaburra Barramundi Farm at Bobs Farm.
Irukandji is a unique, interactive aquarium where students have the opportunity to experience a close encounter with up to 190 sharks and rays in specialised tanks. Irukandji is dedicated to spreading awareness and making a difference for aquatic life through displays, interaction, communication, education, research and action.
Next stop was a tour of a commercial Barramundi Farm. During the tour, students had the chance to see the fish as they move through their lifecycle from fingerlings right through to a market-ready product. They even had the opportunity to feed “Big Barry” who weighs over 22kg and is one metre long—and all managed to keep their fingers intact!
Special thanks to organising teachers, Mr Tejcek and Mrs Houlahan.
