This week SCAS has played host to the Mid North Coast’s most brilliant and brightest. Students from Year 5 to Year 11 competed in a series of academic challenges as part of the da Vinci Decathlon.
In teams of eight, students competed in ten disciplines including Engineering, Mathematics and Chess, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and General Knowledge.
Our SCAS scholars channelled the late da Vinci as they brought their academic prowess and love for learning to the competition. While all teams had great feats in individual disciplines, it was our Year 6 Girls da Vinci team that came out victorious in the Year 5 and 6 category.
SCAS media sat down with Liliana Clarke, Sophia De Carle, Montana Power, Remy Bucton, Shalise Leesfield, Isabella Mitchell, Sophie Lund and Indiana Jones hot off their win and they could barely contain their excitement.
“It just felt like all the hard work we put into school paid off, it was such a great moment we were all bursting with pride and we were all so glad and happy,” Shalise exclaimed.
The team came away with some impressive results across all disciplines, however, it was the Ideation that the girls felt strongest.
“Ideation is where we see a problem and we think of a new unique way to solve it. It was just so much fun, it was so great to express my thoughts with other geniuses,” explains Indianna.
The team of eight was comprised of some veterans of the da Vinci having competed last year as well as some new contenders including Sophie, Montana and Sophia.
“Most people that are here were here last year so I was really nervous but it ended up being really fun,” says Sophie.
Brains being brought together was a considerable force, however, it was the power of organisation that helped the days run smoothly.
“We’d just like to thank Mr Delaney and everybody else who has organised the da Vinci, it was such a fun day and I hope I get to do it again next year,” says Shalise.
The girls now qualify for the National da Vinci Decathlon held at Knox Grammar School in Sydney. Best of luck and well done from the SCAS community.
