On Wednesday 11th April Year 12 Community and Family Studies (CAFS) spent the day at Regis Aged Care in Port Macquarie.
In class, the students have been studying Parenting and Caring. Part of this unit has included exploring the different types of carers, the roles of carers and the rights of the dependent.
Spending the day at Regis Aged Care allowed the students to see the content covered in class come to life, in a practical and real-world setting. The students had morning tea with the residents and discussed with them the difficulties of transitioning to Aged Care and how they have come to really love where they live. A resident OT and Physiotherapist taught the girls how to use different pieces of manual handling equipment, with a few students game enough to try these out for themselves.
Throughout the day the students participated in a number of lifestyle activities with the residents, including gentle exercises to the tune of the Macarena and the Nutbush and a friendly competition of carpet bowls.
A great day was had and each student walked away with a greater understanding and appreciation of the aged and those working in Aged Care.
A huge thank you to Amber and all the Port Macquarie staff for organising such a wonderful experience for our Year 12 students. The conversations and laughs shared with the residents will be something our students will carry with them for a long time.
