Local Ranger Visits EES Students

The Year 12 Earth and Environmental Science (EES) class met with local National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Ranger Shaun Kerrigan on Thursday morning. Shaun shared with the class the demands, rewards and challenges of his job as a NPWS Ranger and gave them first-hand information about pest management of introduced plants and animals in the Hastings area.

Of specific note were the long-term successes in reduction of bitou bush infestations along the coast at Sea Acres, the continuing and ongoing challenge of fox control through a variety of methods, and the rising concern of deer control across various reserves, parks and private properties in the Hastings area. This was an excellent opportunity for our students, and an insight into possible career options in relation to this subject.
