Mathilda King is Hungry for an All Schools Win

They say third time’s a charm and we are hoping that is the case for Year 8 student Mathilda King. For the past two years Mathilda has represented SCAS at New South Wales Combined Independent Schools Swimming. In 2016, she placed third and second, and this year brought home the win.

Now Mathilda progresses again to the New South Wales All Schools Swimming Championships held this Friday. A win here could see Mathilda competing against swimmers from schools across the nation.

“For Nationals they combine 12 years, 13 years and 14 years together, so technically you have to verse the year up from you as well. So, I didn’t make it in last year because of that. Maybe this year I can,” Mathilda explains.

The journey to All Schools has not been an easy one. While balancing her studies, Mathilda also trains six times a week. Morning sessions for Mathilda means waking up at 4am as she fits in her school work before and after training.

“It’s a lot of training. I am hungry all the time, my friends call me out for it,” Mathilda laughs.

The 50 breaststroke is fast, over in 35 seconds. Mathilda’s approach is to give it her all.

“My tactic is to go all out. I like to come out of the pool feeling wobbly,” says Mathilda.

All Mathilda’s hard work and successes are most deserving of reward and Mathilda likes to celebrate a good race by shopping with her mum.

“I’m hoping for a shopping trip this time as well,” she laughs.

The SCAS community wishes Mathilda all the best as she competes at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre this Friday, May 11.
