New Year 3 to 6 Playground

Playgrounds don’t have to be boring to be safe.

Risk within a safe space is the goal of what we do as educators, and this extends to our new playground. It is an exciting project that has the whole school buzzing.

The staff tested the playground recently to make sure it was safe for children and also to show the kids how it should be used. Using two touch points for climbing, being mindful of other users, sliding down the right way, walking through the space and caring for our garden were some of the ground rules that were demonstrated for our envious audience. Our amazing Media team filmed the antics and will put together a video for our next Assembly. Stay tuned!

Each class has a scheduled weekly play time whilst we transition into the use of the playground. This will ensure everyone has a turn and it is not too overcrowded. These times coincide mostly with Physical Education (P.E.) days so students are wearing sports uniform and sneakers. On Fridays the ‘Class of the Week’ and the winning House will receive an additional play time. What an incentive! We hope to have grade play days (e.g Year 6 on Mondays) once the students are more familiar with the equipment.

The playground is only for Years 3 to 6 aged children and is open at Long Break and Short Break under teacher supervision. Access is not permitted on the weekends or out of hours. As you can imagine, having a playground that is not boring has involved Risk Assessments and careful consideration of safety. I would ask all parents to respect this by following these access regulations.

We are very fortunate to have a great team that have worked hard to make this playground happen. Thanks to Claire Mathieson for her design and enthusiasm, and our School Council and Mr Garry Clifton for supporting the project. As I told our students at Assembly a few weeks ago, this playground indicates how much we value them and their right to have a fun and engaging play space at their school.
