Koalas in the Port Macquarie region are threatened because of habit loss, car accidents, domestic pet attacks and disease.
Our Year 1G students wanted to find out if our school was koala friendly, so with clipboards and maps in hand, they wandered the school grounds and discovered that we have a few newly planted and self seeded gum trees on our boundaries. Students plotted the trees on their maps and were very impressed with the natural area of melaleucas and gums at the back oval and even spotted our friendly kangaroos on the hill of the tip. When they headed back to the classroom, students thought about how to present our data. Our littlest people have the right caring attitude that may yet save and protect our fluffy friends. What a wonderful outdoor learning session, Year 1G!
