Two Weeks to go in the Big Battery Blitz Recycling Challenge

St Columba Anglican School is participating in the Port Macquarie Hastings Council ‘Big Battery Blitz’.

Did you know that up to 90% of batteries are recyclable, yet over 97% of them end up in landfill each year with more than 8000 tonnes thrown away. Not only does this create unnecessary waste, it is dangerous to our environment, animals and even us.

We would like to thank everyone who has already sent in their dead old batteries. Our recycling tube and an additional box are filling up fast, so please keep them coming in! While the Blitz challenge wraps up in two weeks, the School will continue to collect batteries as part of our Sustainability initiatives at school.

Spent batteries lying around the home or being placed in our household bins are safety risks. Batteries should be stored separately in a suitable box, in a cool, dry area, and taken to an authorised recycling centre.

In the Port Macquarie-Hastings region, batteries can be dropped off for free in household quantities at:

  • Port Macquarie Waste Transfer Stations (Community Recycling Centres)
  • Council Offices
  • Aldi
  • Officeworks

A full list of drop off locations can be found here.

If you have sent batteries in make sure you complete the survey using the QR code below to be in the running for prizes!
