Welcome Reverend Jon Cornish

We take pleasure in welcoming Reverend Jon Cornish to our staff in 2022 as our new Chaplain and Christian Studies Teacher. Jon completed his Bachelor’s degree at Queensland University, and briefly joined a theatre company before returning to study a Graduate Diploma of Teaching. Jon started his career teaching in a country school southwest of Brisbane and has taught in Queensland and Western Australia before joining us here at SCAS. Throughout his career, Jon has taught a range of subjects including Economics, Legal Studies, Geography, and Philosophy and Religion, and is also a keen sportsman who enjoys coaching cricket and volleyball.

The Media team sat down with Rev. Jon in early Term 1 to find out more about him.

What are you looking forward to about 2022 at SCAS?Meeting people! We are all amazing, diverse, different and beautiful. We are all made in the image of God and we are here to support people to flourish in a nurturing environment. So, yes, getting to know students, staff, parents and the wider community.
What was your favourite co-curricular activity as a student? As a student….hmmm probably cricket, but I played a variety of football codes equally badly! Tennis, ping pong, squash were good too.
What is your favourite thing to do on the weekend in the Port Macquarie area?Walks along the beach, drives to local areas for lunch. I’d like to do more cycling – but need to fix my bike and get into a routine.
What was your latest good read? Selected reading of the Philokalia – the love of the Good, True and Beautiful. I’m not a fiction reader. I read maths, philosophy and theology books mostly. I used to read a lot of science fiction and fantasy novels as a teenager.
Tell us a fun fact about you I have flown gliders and ultra lights but have not landed them. I served in the Army Reserves in the Signals Regiment when doing my degree.
