Welcome to our students for 2019

This morning a whole school assembly was held in the Iona Sports Stadium for our 1170 returning students for 2019. Our Principal, Mr Terry Muldoon, addressed the student body. Below is his welcome address.

Welcome back to our returning students and for those of you who are here for the first time, welcome to your new school.

We have worked hard over the break to improve our campus – creating better buildings and facilities. We have done this to offer you the very best in educational resources.

By the end of 2019 we hope you find you have become a more successful, better informed and skilled person.

But we believe the education we offer at St Columba offer you even more than that. We believe a great education can make you a better person and allow you to play a role in making the world a better place.

If you have a great education…

  • When people lie or misrepresent on the internet on television or in front of you →  You will know how to identify the truth and the facts and how to act on them. You will know how to avoid being the victim of lies and manipulation.
  • When you are concerned about injustice, unfairness and prejudice → You can learn where it comes from, know how to confront it and know how to work with others to stop it.
  • When you are concerned for the health of our planet → You have learnt what caused it to suffer, what you can do to make it better and who you can work with to fix it.

A great education gives you the power to be a better person, make the world a better place and to stop people who want to degrade your life, your friends, your family and your world.

A great  education gives you the capacity to be a thinker, a doer and a worthwhile citizen of this region, this country and the world.

We believe that taking advantage of all this School offers and becoming a more aware, informed and positive human being is a good way to spend 2019.

We hope you agree.
