The closest most Business Studies students get to a real business model is in a textbook case study. Our Year 11 Business Studies students were given the opportunity to put their learning into practice and designed their own promotional campaign to run during the school’s NAIDOC Day celebrations.

“We talk a lot about scenarios in class so being able to create a scenario, do the scenario and have it actually pay off afterwards was really useful,” explains Business Studies student Christopher Palin.

The students on NAIDOC Day set up a stall selling NAIDOC themed goods including socks, stationery items, bags and wristbands to the SCAS community. All proceeds from their efforts will be going to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, a cause Business Studies student Joanne Ryder said was close to her classmates.

“We chose the Indigenous Literacy Foundation because it is close to what we do. We are students and we’re about learning. There were also some statistics that spoke to us,” says Joanna Ryder.

The class learned that only 34% of Indigenous Year 5 students in very remote areas are at or above national minimum reading standards, compared to 95% for non-Indigenous students in major cities, according to the 2017 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy. This inspired the students throughout the process that saw the class split into groups that mirror the roles of a real business.

“We broke up into the functions of a business. We had people working in the finance portion so they needed to work out prices, we had a marketing team who did posts on social media, put posters around the school and made a website for online ordering,” explains Christopher.

The students have raised an impressive $700 and have “almost broken even”. The SCAS community has another opportunity to support Year 11 Business Studies’ cause as they will be having a pop-up shop and raffle on Wednesday 8 August. Items for purchase range between $10 – $15 and are available to both Primary and Secondary Students.
