In December 2020 St Columba Anglican School student, Hannah Jones, attended the BHP Foundation Science and Engineering Awards—Australia’s most prestigious school science and engineering awards. Hannah competed alongside 23 other selected finalists from across the nation in an event that spanned across many days, with her invention “RoboBall”, a robotic soccer training partner designed as her HSC Design and Technology major work. Hannah, who is also an extremely talented soccer player, competed in the competition while she was also in training camp for the Young Matildas Australian Soccer Team.
Hannah represented St Columba proudly, and at the conclusion of the event was one of six students selected for the Australian team to attend ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair) to be held in May 2021. ISEF is the world’s largest student science and engineering fair where more than 1,800 students earn the right to compete for nearly $5 million in prizes. In 2021, this competition will take place virtually in order to keep the finalists, volunteers, judges and staff safe during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
This is the second time that a St Columba student has been selected for the International Science and Engineering Fair. Class of 2018 graduate, Isaac Heagney, was awarded the title of Rural Young Scientist for his emergency alert for rock fishermen, designed as part of his 2018 HSC Design and Technology major work. Isaac was chosen to take his invention to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona, where he had the opportunity to showcase his invention to thousands of delegates at the fair. Isaac was one of only nine students from Australia who took part, competing amongst 1,800 students from over 75 countries.
