Year 11 students have had an eye-opening experience during a recent Modern History lesson. The students were fortunate enough to interview local Afghan Veterans and gain a first-hand account as to what role each played in the war, the achievements, and the impacts of serving your country in a conflict situation.
This authentic experience was also a key feature of the student’s first assessment task for Modern History, where they will work closely with Port Macquarie’s branch of Soldier On, a charity set up to support veterans and their families.
As one student noted, “It was such an incredible experience for a lot of people in our class, I know many of us cried at one point after the interview. It made Soldier On so much more real being confronted with the people it is helping. When you meet the people that served their country – it can be really confronting and makes you just that little bit more aware of how lucky we are to live in peace.”
The School would like to thank Jody Geosits from Soldier On Port Macquarie for her organisation of the event and the veterans for showing such courage in sharing their insights with our students. As a History Teacher, I was very proud of the exemplary behaviour and respect that SCAS students showed towards our veterans.
