Safe on Social Student Talks

On Tuesday, 7 February, students across Years 3 to 10 participated in individual online safety talks delivered by Safe on Social Specialist Facilitator for Cyber Safety Simon Richarson to coincide with Safer Internet Day.

Safer Internet Day is a global event that aims to create safer online spaces. This year’s theme prompts students to Connect. Reflect. Protect.

Connect safely and with purpose – by keeping apps and devices secure and using social media in positive ways.
Reflect before we act – by taking a moment to consider how what we do and say online may affect others.
Protect ourselves and others by taking action – by telling family, friends or colleagues about eSafety and how we can help.

Simon, who was once a high school teacher, followed by a nine-year stint as the Mayor of Byron Bay Shire, has a wealth of real-life experience with the impact of unhealthy social media exposure on students. Simon connected with the students in a meaningful way about staying safe on social media by adapting each talk to the age and stage of student groups.

At SCAS, we know that keeping students safer online takes more than just student-focused education. Students need supportive and knowledgeable parents and caregivers to help them manage safe online experiences.

Parents can learn more about online safety by accessing a range of resources available on our new SchoolTV@SCAS website. We would encourage parents to check out our CyberSafety Series with topics such as:
