Ben is loving studying at the Con – in amongst the Botanical Gardens, near Circular Quay – and has fallen in with a great bunch of down to earth, creative friends. He has now started his second year at the Conservatorium, and experimented with various compositional methods, and says he is beginning to get a better understanding of his own musical style. Ben is currently composing a 15-minute, three-movement work for clarinet quartet, to be played by ‘The Clari Boys’, a group formed by Oliver Schermacher (another Port Macquarie musician).
Ben says that one of the best things about the experience is hearing his music played every semester. He has also been commissioned to write two pieces for Trinity Grammar’s primary school choir, and is really looking forward to the opportunity to work with students again.
Ben is also working as an usher and technician at the Conservatorium, a stage mechanist at The City Recital Hall, and a piano teacher. He is currently renting a lovely old apartment in Glebe with his partner Tahnee, and enjoying living and studying in the city.
