We’re pleased to announce our participation in the AISNSW Teaching School Hubs program, a key part of the Growing and Nurturing Educators initiative. This program offers an enriching experience for aspiring educators enrolled in bachelor’s or master’s degree programs, immersing them in hands-on learning opportunities. Through this initiative, our school is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of teachers, providing them with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to thrive in their careers. At SCAS, we’re committed to offering a supportive and fulfilling educational journey for Education Trainees, ensuring they’re well-prepared to make a positive impact in classrooms and communities after graduation.
In 2024, we are delighted to welcome Josie Charlton and Cassandra Cains as our Education Trainees. Their passion and commitment will undoubtedly enhance the dynamic learning environment we strive to create.
We spoke with Josie and Cassandra to learn more about their background and interests.
Can you tell us a bit about your teaching journey so far?
Josie: I’m currently completing my Bachelor of Education (K-12) degree at CSU, majoring in Secondary Mathematics. I completed my first university placement at Willow Tree Public School in 2023. I was also a School Learning Support Officer at Kempsey Adventist School and St Agnes Primary School for a portion of the 2022 school year.
Cassandra: My educational journey commenced at St Columba, where I cultivated a foundation of knowledge and values that continue to shape my professional path. After graduating, I completed a bachelor’s degree in health and biomedical sciences at Charles Sturt University. I am currently working as a teacher trainee with Mrs Drury in 2K, whilst studying for my Master of Teaching. This blend of experience has equipped me with a diverse skill set and a holistic perspective of education.
What are you looking forward to about 2024 at SCAS?
Josie: Being immersed in secondary learning, learning the fundamentals of being a secondary teacher, and collaborating with the Secondary Mathematics Faculty.
Cassandra: I’m excited to witness the growth and development that the students will exhibit during this academic year! Grasping new concepts and achieving goals is so fulfilling to witness. As an alumni student, I’m aware of the strong sense of community SCAS fosters and I am eager to immerse myself in such a supportive environment again.
What was your favourite co-curricular activity as a student?
Josie: In school, I was involved in numerous co-curricular activities, playing on every sports team, and serving on the Student Representative Council. I enjoyed representing my school at events like the STEM Symposium at UTS in Year 7 and Year 10.
Cassandra: There are so many! Chamber choir was an amazing co-curricular activity that I found so much enjoyment in. Ballet was also so fun!
What is your favourite thing to do on the weekend?
Josie: My weekends are a blur most of the time. I can either be at home smashing out university assessments, out travelling around the state, or up at my hometown in Kempsey seeing family.
Cassandra: Morning coffee, swimming at the beach, watching my husband surf, and baking!
What was your latest good read?
Josie: I’m reading a lot of texts for my studies. My best bet for a good read currently is either a NESA syllabus document or a research paper.
Cassandra: Steps to Christ, written by Ellen G. White.
Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself?
Josie: I was an accomplished swimmer until I retired from competitive swimming in 2022 after a very successful season.
Cassandra: I love to bake sourdough bread and I have a starter that’s over 100 years old.
