The 2019 Year 11 Tertiary Awareness Camp students travelled down by train to the YHA in Sydney where we spent the next three days participating in a variety of activities to become well acquainted with university life and navigating the city using a variety of public transport. Visiting universities such as the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, and the University of Wollongong, we were able to see the different facilities, degrees, and scholarships that they offer. An excellent opportunity to aid the decision of how to make the transition from school to a tertiary environment.
In addition to this, we had the chance to participate in Urban Photographic Challenges in squads of about ten as we navigated the city. We also enjoyed cultural activities such as dining out, going to watch the musical ‘Saturday Night Fever’ at the Lyric Theatre and watch a Roosters Vs. Broncos NRL game at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Elective excursions were also offered such as visiting the Sydney Jewish Museum, Sea Life Aquarium, National Institute of Dramatic Art, Powerhouse Museum, and a Youth Law Australia Tour and discussion. Legal Studies students were also given the opportunity to experience an authentic “Day in the Life of a Sydney Barrister” experience attending the Supreme Court and being addressed by leading legal practitioners as well as enjoying a catered lunch on the 61st floor of one of the Sydney highrises.
Overall the excursion was fast paced and packed with experiences. Thank you to all of the teachers who made this possible for us.
